Biography

Josip Konta was born in Livno on May 18, 1946. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 1972 and completed his postgraduate studies as a collaborator in the master workshop of Professor Antun Augustinčić from 1972 to 1974.

Following three years (1974-1977) as the director of the Art Foundry at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, he has been living and working as an independent artist in Zagreb.

His fifty-year-long artistic career, marked by a series of solo and group exhibitions, has produced artworks found in private collections in both Croatia and abroad.

Analysis of the sculpture and possible meaning

Woman’s Game is an incredibly emotional and visually impressive sculpture depicting a woman alone, immersed in the depths of her inner world. Konta masterfully created this dignified bronze figure, which was subsequently placed in the town park of Livno in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1989.

During the tragic war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1991-1995), the sculpture miraculously survived a dozen artillery shells that exploded in the park, remaining undamaged and intact. Word of its remarkable survival spread among the local community, with the local newspaper proclaiming it the protectress of Livno. A preserved article from the newspaper serves as a reminder of this incredible story.

Unfortunately, the original 1/8 edition of the sculpture was stolen in 2015 and has since disappeared without a trace. In honor of its unfortunate fate and with the intention of preserving its history, the author, Josip Konta, decided to create a 2/8 edition, which stands before us today as a testament to an incredible story of resilience, beauty, and inspiration.
